TV Sticks vs. Android Boxes, Which Device Should You Buy?

March 25, 2022

TV has quickly become the proverbial place to get affordable access to Sky TV shows, movies and sports. In addition to smart TVs and apps on the device, we have two streaming devices; the TV Stick and the TV Android Box.

In this guide we take these two streaming players head to head to decide which one should be crowned our best streaming device. TV Smart Boxes may no longer be as readily available, but if you already own one, you may be wondering if it's worth investing in a new streaming device.

The categories we'll be evaluating include price, design, voice control, and the apps and channels they offer. To give you a good idea of the other streaming devices on the market. While both allow you to watch apps and channels on your old TV that you don't have access to, some features and design elements are specific to particular models.

Design

The most obvious difference between a TV Stick and a box is the size. The TV Smart Box is much larger than the TV Stick, which is only the size of a USB stick.

The TV Stick is also hidden when in use, while the box is visible on the TV stand. However, in terms of design, the two streaming devices are similar. Both are sleek black devices with bright accents. Simply plug both devices into the HDMI port on the back of your TV and you're ready to go.

Price

The TV Smart Stick is the more affordable one, depending on which TV passes it has. For the price, the Streaming Stick offers one month of Entertainment Pass and one month of Sky Cinema.

In comparison, the TV Android Smart Box was more expensive when it was launched due to its 4K streaming capabilities. It is still available on Amazon, but it is worth noting that its price can fluctuate, sometimes much higher than the original retail price.

Voice Control

Voice control is available for both streaming devices. Hands-free voice control via the remote allows you to search the home page, pause the TV show you're watching or turn up the volume.

To activate voice control, press and hold the "microphone" button on the remote and speak your request.

We found voice control to be responsive and accurate almost 100% of the time. We found that voice control did speed up the process of searching the home page, but found it more natural to pause/play TV shows with the remote.

Which one should you buy

For most people, the TV Smart Stick would be the better choice. TV boxes are no longer readily available at most UK retailers. The Streaming Stick is small, unobtrusive to use and offers a large selection of TV shows, movies and apps.

The TV Stick is small, its size makes it easy to throw in your bag when you're on the go, and it's sturdy enough not to get damaged on the go.

The TV Box streams at resolutions up to 4K, compared to the 720p resolution of the TV Smart Stick.
